Most Common Evergreen Groundcover Varieties

Junipers – Used frequently on slopes to help with soil erosion. Most are referred to as creeping junipers. Most are cold hardy, a few go to warmer climates into zone 9. Some of the most popular juniper ground covers are:

Euonymus | ‘Euonymus forunei’  | There are a few  euonymus that are considered a woody vine.  Just be careful, some are considered invasive in many states.  Moonshadow     Emerald Gaiety  Purple Wintercreeper    Emerald ‘n’ Gold

Winter Heather | Known for dense foliage and winter flowers. ‘Golden Lady’ and ‘Springwood Pink’ have been used as ground covers. They grow about 12” tall and about 2 feet wide.  Flowers in late winter to early spring.  Zones 7 to 9.

Russian Cypress | ‘Microbiota decussata’ | considered a spreading conifer | also called Russian arborvitae | 8-12” tall and up to 12 feet wide.

Leucothoe Scarletta | also called Drooping Laurel or just Scarletta. This native is shade tolerant! Scarletta is an evergreen that can handle full shade! It's hardy for grow zones 5 through 8. It is considered a broadleaf evergreen with new growth a scarlet color that turns into a shiny deep green. In witner the foliage turns a rediish-bronze. Leucothoe Scarletta spreads by suckering. In other words, it will produce roots wherever a stem touches the ground.

Sweet Box | 'Sarcococca hookeriana' | Another shade lover, Sweet Box evergreen shrubs aren't used as much but are a great choice as a ground cover.  There are Sweet Box varietiies hardy for grow zones 6 through 9. They have small clusters of white flowers that come out late winter into early spring. It's glossy dark green foliage is similar in look to a boxwood (thus the name Sweet 'Box') but the leaves are a bit larger. The sweet part of the name refers to the fragrant flowers. Sweet Box will spread through underground suckering.
