Planting Tree Nursery Review
The Planting Tree rating remained the same as last month at 78.5 which puts them at #9 on our top 20 rankings. They are bunched in the middle of the pack with 5 other nurseries but we still consider them one of our top-tier online nurseries. It also looks like they have made some recent revisions to their product pages. If there’s one constant with online plant nurseries, it’s change!
Planting Tree Nursery Sold!
We have lamented many times that PlantingTree.com looked very similar to Fast Growing Trees. We used to believe they were either related somehow to Fast Growing Trees or had done a great job knocking them off. That suspicion turned out to be prophetic. It was announced that Fast Growing Trees acquired Planting Tree in July 2021. Here’s the official press release: https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/fast-growing-trees-completes-acquisition-of-the-planting-tree-301328196.html
I’m happy for the 2 lifelong friends who started Planting Tree. I never had the chance to speak with them but they seemed to care genuinely.
Prices Have Gone Up
It seems too coincidental that the Planting Tree prices have gone up to be more in line with the 2 other nurseries owned by the same organization. Planting Tree has raised prices to be as high as Brighter Blooms and Fast Growing Trees.
Unboxing Planting Tree Orders
Unboxing a Meyer Lemon tree – Our latest order was for a 3 to 4-foot tall Meyer Lemon tree. View unboxing pictures and our review here.
We also bought a 1-gallon Loropetalum shrub from Planting Tree in February of this year. You can view pictures and our review of the unboxing here. Unfortunately, our shrub died within 2 months. We bought 2 loropetalum shrubs from another nursery around the same time and they are thriving.
We placed an order in the spring of 2019 at plantingtree.com. We posted pictures and a complete review on our blog: Unboxing Plants From Planting Tree. We were happy with the plants we received but the boxing wasn’t the best compared to what we have received from other online nurseries.
The website is relatively new, dating back to just 2014. This makes it one of the youngest of the top-rated online nurseries so they suffer a bit in the rating score for years in service.
Good selection of evergreen trees & shrubs! Planting Tree’s selection of evergreen trees & shrubs seems pretty good. It’s an impressive collection. They offer a variety of sizes, mostly 1 and 3-gallon containers although they recently started offering smaller-sized 1 and 2-quart containers. They do have a pretty cool page for plant sizes that includes pictures of the various containers.
We have proven before that just listing a tree’s height can be deceiving. You can read our story here. Most of the trees at PlantingTree.com are sold just by height. We couldn’t find anywhere where they say the size of the potting container. As a general rule, a 4-foot tree will be a lot more developed in a 5-gallon versus a 3-gallon container.
A perfect example is looking at their Emerald Green Arborvitae. When we checked recently, they had a 1-2 foot tree for $19.95. The next size, a 2-3 foot tree, was $69.95! It’s hard to imagine that both are in the same size container. We strongly recommend calling before you buy any trees solely off the height listed. Find out the size of the container. What’s below the ground, the root ball size is just as important as the height above the ground.
Planting Tree has a decent number of product reviews and they seem legit. Being so new hasn’t provided much of a chance to accumulate too many reviews yet.
Google customer reviews for Planting Tree are pretty good. They have a 4.2 average star rating out of 5 with 114 reviews.
The warranty from Planting Tree is average at best. You need to notify them within 1 day of delivery if there is shipping damage. They will only offer a replacement if it dies within 5 days. If your plant(s) don’t make it within 45 days they offer a 50% store credit.
Planting Tree offers a 1-year warranty for a separate cost, a popular feature many online nurseries have started to offer in the past few years. Kind of arbitrary but you need to prove you followed their planting & care guidelines. If they determine your claim qualifies, they will offer a one-time replacement, excluding shipping costs.
Just to make sure it is very clear, they have a separate page for their refund policy. To their credit, it’s not bogged down with a lot of legalese. It says you can’t get a refund… “all sales are final. In the event a living product is rejected on delivery we will not credit back your account. There will be no refunds.”
The Planting Tree even has a page that shows you delivery times from their location to anywhere in the mainland U.S.
Our bottom line… we would buy from the Planting Tree again.
What were the red flags?
- The primary negative, as we mentioned above, is their warranty & return policies. It leaves a lot to be desired.
- As we mentioned above, we can not get any products added to the cart to show up on the cart page.
