Spruce trees are popular because of their symmetrical stature, distinctive colors and needle retention. This is also what makes them a favorite for Christmas trees. The Colorado Blue Spruce is striking in any yard.  There have been other retail spruce tree introductions recently with more unique features, such as the Weeping Blue Spruce.

Spruce trees are not fast growers but have dense foliage, are hardy and very disease resistant. This makes them popular as windbreaks and for privacy.  The Black Hills Spruce is considered as having the densest foliage.

There are approximately 45 species of spruce trees. This includes dwarf species, one of the most popular is the Dwarf Alberta Spruce. Its small with bright green color and does well in containers, as a unique hedge along property lines.
