Baby Gem is a dwarf variety of the popular and hardy Japanese Boxwood (buxus). They are a dense, low-maintenance evergreen shrub. It is deer, rabbit, and pest resistant. Because it has such a dense growth habit, it rarely needs pruning. The growth rate is slow. A lot depends on soil, water & sunlight conditions at the planting site.

The Baby Gem does well in full sun to part shade and is drought tolerant once established. Baby Gem Boxwood is popular as a low hedge or border. If planting to create a hedge, space the Boxwood about 2 feet apart to create a thick, lush evergreen hedge. Landscapers choose the Baby Gem for their high-end look.

This boxwood is also used in containers as accent plants on patios and porches. Just make sure the container is large enough to handle the root growth. The root ball will grow to approximately the same width & depth as the shrub.

While established growth has the familiar small, dark green leaves, Baby Gem new growth is very unique. New leaves emerge with a cherry-yellow tint.
