Days are getting shorter, nighttime temperatures are getting frosty in some parts of the country. As the temperatures are dropping this fall, so are prices of evergreen trees and shrubs.

Every fall nurseries want to thin out their inventory as much as possible. It’s expensive to keep plants alive through winter.

This is especially true with larger sizes such as 5 and 7-gallon containers. We’re seeing some of the lowest prices of the year on larger size privacy trees such as Emerald Green Arborvitae, Cryptomeria Radicans and Leyland Cypress. Despite some chilly temperatures, there is still time to plant. Fall is the best time to plant new trees and shrubs. The plants focus their energy below ground on the roots as opposed to trying to survive the sun & heat above ground.

Ideally, you want to get new plants in the ground at least 3 weeks before the ground freezes 3 to 6 inches below the surface. Not to mention it’s problematic digging your planting hole when even the top layer of dirt is frozen.
