Laurel is commonly used to describe over 40 different plants. It can be confusing! Laurus nobilis is the scientific name for the common laurel or bay laurel. It's best known for the aromatic leaves used in cooking.
Cherry laurels (Kalmia latifolia) puts on a pretty impressive display with their spring blossoms. They also produce fruit that does look like a cherry but they aren't related to the 'prunus' cherry trees. They are native evergreen shrubs but some varieties are listed as invasive in some states.
Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia)is a shade loving native evergreen shrub with beautiful spring blooms. The name has been used for a number of unrelated shrubs.
