Most people think of the prickly leaves and winter red berries when they think of hollies. There’s over 400 different holly ‘species’ and it seems new introductions are made every year.
Holly shrubs are used frequently as trimmed specimens on either side of an entryway or in front of a garage. See our holly picture gallery below.
Hollies are also popular as privacy shrubs. The Nellie Stevens is a fast-growing holly that many online nurseries have for sale. They’re great when you want something that doesn’t take up as much space as some popular evergreen trees. See picture below unboxing a 3 gallon Nellie Stevens.
Most hollies are pretty tolerant of a variety of soil conditions and shade. If you do want the classic red berries, most varieties require a male and female variety to produce berries. You can usually go 1 male to every 2 to 4 females.
