Mugo Pine - Mountain Pine
Pinus Mugo, commonly called Mugo Pine or Mountain Pine is a spreading conifer known for its dense foliage. There are 5 varieties available commercially. You can usually find one or 2 at your local garden center. They are a popular alternative to Juniper shrubs. Most varieties are cold hardy to zone 3 and can handle some heat through zone 7. They are the most popular in the upper midwest & New England regions.
Mugo Pine is great for people who desire that fresh pine smell but don't have the space for large pine trees. Mugo pines spread outward more than up. The pine needles still have an upward growth but are always within a few inches of the ground. In fact, Mugo Pines are known for having thicker foliage than most pine trees. They can be used as a very thick, dense privacy wall. Just keep in mind how much space is needed for how wide they can get.
